December Newsletter

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Golden Meadows 2nd Ward Relief Society
“Charity Never Faileth”
Presidency Message
Once again the Christmas season is upon us and our thoughts turn to the birth of our Savior. President Hinckley said, “He (Jesus) was the lowly babe who came to earth in the meridian of time and brought to us the gift of Christmas. He was the Resurrection and the Life, who brought to us the wonder of Easter. There would be no Christmas if there had not been Easter. The babe Jesus of Bethlehem would be but another baby without the redeeming Christ of Gethsemane and Calvary, and the triumphant fact of the Resurrection.”
Truly, it is the atonement and resurrection of our Savior that brings meaning and awe to the events surrounding His birth. We testify that Heavenly Father gave us the gift of His only begotten Son. In obedience to the Father and through immeasurable love, the Son freely gave His life. Because of this gift, we may repent, be resurrected, and return triumphant to our heavenly home.
May we ponder the miracle of His birth, the majesty of His life, and the mercy of His sacrifice. May we seek Him as the Wise Men of old and bring others with us on our journey back to Him. May we be filled with the love of the Lord and reach out to share that love with others.
With love: Bonnie Peterson, Dawn Lords, Jill Jorgensen, Heather Hansen

Sister Spotlight: Sarah W. Frank
Sarah grew up in Oregon, spent a few years attending BYU-Hawaii, met her husband in Jerusalem, served a mission in the Philippines, got married in the SLC temple, graduated from the U of U, gave birth to twins and is now expecting baby #3! She’s a bit freaked out about having three children less than 16 months, but is up for the adventure! Sarah teaches voice lesson, is the executive director (part-time) for a non-profit org that teaches music, dance, theater programs for elementary schools and just launched Sounds of Music Studios – voice/piano/guitar lessons from SL – Provo. On the side, Sarah is working on her Master’s degree at BYU in Public Management – don’t worry, only one night a week. She is a busy girl, but is the kind that can’t stand to be idle! She loves spending time with her twins the most and adores her happy-go-lucky, adventurous, comedian of a husband, Brandon. Sarah also has “pregnant brain,” totally forgot about the newsletter, and stayed up too late to spotlight anyone other than herself!

GM 2nd Ward Enriching Ideas October 2009

Presidency Message
“Conferences have been part of the Church since the beginning of this dispensation. The first conference was held just two months after the Church was organized. We meet twice a year to be instructed by the General Authorities and general officers of the church…. Every time we are obedient to the words of the prophets and apostles we reap great blessings. We receive more blessings than we can understand at the time, and we continue to receive blessings long after our initial decision to be obedient.” (Paul V. Johnson, “The Blessings of General Conference,” Liahona, Nov 2005, 50–52) Once again we had an opportunity to listen to the words of our Prophet and General Authorities to know of the Lords love and desire for us. One of my favorite scriptures is found in Doctrine and Covenants 1:38, “What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.” We pray that you have enjoyed listening to General Conference, that you have learned from our leaders the things our Heavenly Father would have you do and to be able to receive the blessings that come from obeying our church leaders. We pray your testimonies have been strengthened and your spirits renewed.
Bonnie Peterson, Dawn Lords, Jill Jorgensen, and Heather Hansen

Food Storage
"We encourage members world-wide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings. We ask that you be wise as you store food and water and build your savings. Do not go to extremes; it is not prudent, for example, to go into debt to establish your food storage all at once. With careful planning, you can, over time, establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve." —The First Presidency, All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Home Storage, Feb. 2007, 1

Visiting Teaching Message- quote
Sister Julie Beck (General R.S. President) “To nurture means to cultivate, care for, and make grow…Nurturing requires organization, patience, love and work. Helping growth occur through nurturing is truly a powerful and influential role bestowed on women” (“Mothers Who Know,” Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2007, 76, 77).

GM 2nd Ward Enriching Ideas September 2009

We live in a great day of temple building around the world. The adversary surely is mindful of the increasing number of temples that now dot the earth. Faithful Saints have been strengthened by adversity, and are the recipients of the Lord’s tender mercies. Like the pioneers who found the place which God for them prepared; we can fresh courage take, knowing our God will never us forsake. It is the fire of the temple covenant that burned in their hearts that gave them strength. It was their commitment to worship and honorably holding a name and standing in the house of the Lord. (taken from Elder Bednar’s conference talk 05/2009)
We know that we’ve been given the blessing of temples in our lives as a refuge and protection from the storms of life. We love and care about each of you, and pray that we’ll remain true and steadfast to the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is where we’ll find the direction and happiness we are looking for in our lives.
Have a wonderful September! The GM Relief Society Presidency,
Nina Biesinger, Lauri Lund, Summer Gordon, & Heather Hansen

Food Storage
Because food is so important to good health and even to life itself, it is one of the most important parts of a home storage program. It is wise to store the basic foods our families are willing to eat, and to know how to prepare the foods in order to avoid wasting food during times of emergency. Store a variety of foods, because we need variety during emergencies in order to maintain good health. The needs of your family will determine the amount of food you should store.
Visiting Teaching Message- quote
Sister Julie Beck (General R.S. President) outlined three things to help us in our goal to obtain eternal life. They are:
Increase in faith and personal righteousness.
Strengthen families and homes.
Serve the Lord and His children. This also means to seek out and care for the poor and needy.
As we pursue these goals, we will be ready and willing to teach and serve those we Visit Teach. The Lord has promised that He will strengthen us. He will help us.

Presidency Message
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Proverbs 31:10, 25-38

Virtuous living “at all times and in all things, and in all places” qualifies you for the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. Determine to partake worthily of the sacrament each week and fill your life with virtuous activities that will bring spiritual power. As you do this, you will grow stronger in you ability to resist temptation, keep the commandments, and become more like Jesus Christ. –Virtue Pamphlet

As you strive to follow the teaching of our Savior we pray that you can find the peace that comes from living a virtuous life.

Love, Nina Biesinger, Lauri Lund, Summer Gordon and Heather Hansen

Food Storage

"In reviewing the Lord’s counsel to us on the importance of preparedness, I am impressed with the plainness of the message. The Savior made it clear that we cannot place sufficient oil in our preparedness lamps by simply avoiding evil. We must also be anxiously engaged in a positive program of preparation.”

Visiting Teaching Message- quote
“The Lord has blessed women with divine attributes of love, compassion, kindness, and charity. Through our monthly visits as visiting teachers, we have the power to bless each sister as we extend our arms of love and kindness and give the gifts of compassion and charity. No matter what our individual circumstances are, we all have the opportunity to edify and nurture others.” –Sister Silvia Allred, Gen. R.S. Presidency.

Pressure Canning and Pressure Cooking

Thank you Nancy Smith and Shelli Smith for the great class on pressure cooking and pressure canning. We loved it and learned so much! Just a little info from the class. You can pressure cook anything that can be boiled, steamed or braised. Nancy cooked frozen chicken in 10 min. She made a enchilada casserole in less then 20 min!!! It was wonderful! Then, Shelli showed us pressure canning. She took her thawed but not cooked chicken breast, cut it up and smashed it into the jar. No water added, put the seal on the jar and pressure canned it. Amazing!! So much cheaper then buying canned meat. Plus she showed us some bbq pork that she has done that her family gobbles up! Thanks ladies for all of the great info! Some resources are www.extension.usu.edu and www.freshpreserving.com

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Thursday night at 7:00 at Nancy's house we are learning how to pressure cook. She'll teach us how to cook frozen chicken in 10 minutes and a roast in 30! Simple and delicious. Shelli will be teaching us about canning. Come and learn how to preserve the bounty you're growing in your square foot garden!
